Conducting research and small scales presents challenges at all levels. At the modeling stage, we deal with interactions of several physical and sometimes chemical domains with each other. Fabrication of prototypes requires complicated equipment and a deep understanding of undergoing processes. Finally, when testing these devices, one often needs to account for many phenomena that could affect the experiment. Nonetheless, we love these challenges!

Fundamental issues we have been working on include:
  • Damping at small scales
  • Development of new sensing mechanisms
  • Self-sustaining oscillations at small scales
  • Nonlinear sensing and actuation
  • Novel actuators for micro- and nano-devices.
  • Noise analysis
  • Modeling of physical phenomena at small scales
